Born
and raised in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Kyle Schauf shared a youth
similar to one that you would expect of a Mississippi River town youngster.
Kyle’s father and mother, Steve and Patti, introduced him to fishing
at very young age. He and his family spent countless hours on the banks
of the river and aboard the family boat fishing for anything that would
bite. It was then that he began to develop a love and respect for the
outdoors. What separated Kyle from the rest was his early-on curiosity
and determination for understanding what makes fish bite. At the age
of 13, Kyle got his first boat, a 14’ V-bottom with an 18hp engine.
Between baseball practices and summer jobs, the next five summers were
spent on the river exploring his curiosity. From the time the ice would
break in the spring to ice up in the fall, Kyle often spent full days
fishing for bass, the very species that had sparked his curiosity at
a young age.
Kyle had always
enjoyed listening to bass tournament stories told by his father and
family friends. Fishing was often the main subject at many family gatherings.
Kyle had always told his father that his goal was to pay for his college
education thru bass tournament winnings even though he knew his 14 ft
boat wasn’t enough to keep him competitive in tournaments. Kyle decided
to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture
where he later received his bachelor’s degree. In his final year of
college, after years of saving from part-time jobs, Kyle finally saved
enough money and bought his first tournament rig, a Ranger Comanche
powered by 150 Mariner, which he still competes in today.
…Professional…Adaptable…Driven
As an angler, Kyle
stands apart from others by the approach he takes to competing at the
professional level. With a bachelors degree and professional career
in the field of Architecture, Kyle has developed strong problem solving
skills and an ability to devise the ‘best possible’ solution all while
working on a strict timeline. Kyle utilizes these same skills when creating
a winning tournament strategy.
Being adaptable
is something that Kyle has learned over the years not only with architecture
but fishing as well. Being adaptable is an extremely valuable trait in
tournament fishing. Whether it is as simple as changing lures or completely
changing tactics, you can bet Kyle is one of the first to make things
happen when the fish are not cooperating.
The curiosity to
make fish bite, along with adapting to ever changing conditions, and
dedication to the outdoors are qualities that make Kyle a driven
individual. If his favorite fishing hole isn’t covered in ice,
there is a good chance that at sunrise Kyle’s trailer will be dripping
from its recent launch. From dawn to dusk, he will be on the water
adding knowledge and ‘know how’ to his lifetime of experience. When
he’s not on the water, you can typically find him participating in many
bass related internet chat rooms, reading or writing articles, and attending
seminars and trade shows.
Kyle enjoys fishing
the many lakes and rivers the Midwest has to offer. Whether for pleasure
or for tournaments, it’s during his travels that fishing allows him
to enjoy the outdoors and see the beauty that nature has to offer. It
also gives him the opportunity to meet numerous fisherman/women. He
always enjoys talking with fellow fisherman about fishing, the equipment
he uses, and the best ways to help our environment. Although Kyle’s
tournament fishing career is still very young, Kyle’s professionalism,
adaptability and drive are factors that are sure to launch a lifetime
of opportunities in the sport.
